Microsoft Works is an office suite available from the Microsoft Corporation. It is considered by most to be a smaller, less expensive version of the Microsoft Office suite; it includes the Microsoft Works word processor, the Works spreadsheet, and the Works database.

Microsoft's Word is able to open (and save as) Works word processor documents, and Microsoft's Excel is able to open (and save as) Works spreadsheets.

As far as I know, Microsoft's Word shouldn't have any problems opening a Works file. Word is a compontent of MS Office so you should be fine.

As Ted says, you should have no problem opening a .wps file using Microsoft Word.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure it'll be a works document, the version of works or your word version could be causing the problem.

Try downloading the Works to Word converter program from the Microsoft website:

Works 6.0 Converter for Works and Word Users

If this doesn't work, try downloading the free Works/Word document viewer in the main section above.

Best of luck :)

Currently using MS Works version 8.5 2005, on XP. I'm getting two messages when I try to open a particular file.

One says simething about needing a converter file. The other says thefile can't be open'd because the file format is not supported by any installed converters.

This is news to me since I had been using this file with no problems. However I really need this file now Please Help. EL

Microsoft has pulled Works 6/7/8/9 coverters for any version of Office earlier than Office 2003 - which is a crock of c r a p.

I'm having the same issue with an important WPS file, created in an unknown version of Microsoft Works. NOTHING will open it correctly. And now there are no converters available from Microsoft for my relatively recent version of Office.

I know this sounds really dumb but I cannot save to a .wps extension in my Word 2003 program. The pull-down list shows the option to save in Works 6 and 7. When I click on it, it starts an export file and asks I insert my Word disc. After I do, it simply opens a list of everything on the Word disc without converting anything. I have no idea what those things contained in the Word disc do. Any ideas? I've Googled myself to death and only find .wps to word. Thanks

Hi Ken,

Not sure to be honest, it sounds as though Word is missing something. Try inserting the CD first, cancelling the screen that details what's on the CD, and then loading up Word and try converting to works again.

Microsoft should clean their own MESS! Provide us a clear solution to this problem now. Your converters don't seem to work!

I'm getting the following message when trying to open a file in My Documents. (This is a file that had been opening just fine with Microsoft Works until my computer "froze" and I turned off the computer.

"Works cannot open this file (name given). The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt."

A download of Microsoft Word Viewer did not help.

I get a document of little squares!

Please help, this is a huge file, a book chapter of 169 pages!

Any help appreciated! Thanks!
