The .ogg file extension was created by the Xiph.Org foundation and is an open standard container format for digital multimedia, unrestricted by software patents (unlike the .mp3 format) and was designed for efficient streaming and manipulation.
As the .ogg file is a container file, it can contain any Ogg media such as audio, video and text (such as subtitles). The most common reference to .ogg files is Ogg Vorbis formatted audio.
Ogg is becoming very popular, mainly due to the free and open nature of the format. Many commercial and non-commercial media players now support the format, including many portable media players.
To play .ogg files, you need the Ogg Directshow codec (See links below).
