The BlackBerry is a wireless hand-held device and features mobile, text, fax, email and web browsing functionality (along with other wireless services). Software exists for the major operating systems that will allow you to synchronise your BlackBerry with your computer. Once synchronised, you can transfer documents (such as emails and your calendar) between the two devices or to simply create backups, which are given the .ipd file extension.
The .IPD (Inter@ctive Pager Backup) file contains all selected backup data, be it your emails, calendar or even the configuration data. This file format was designed for backups and restores only, and was not intended to be accessed through your computer. However, many BlackBerry owners do wish to access this data and at the time of writing, the only software application that will let you do this is ProcessText Group's "ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter" which is free to try for 30 days and then $19.95 to purchase a single user licence.

I am having same problem as peachy99. I backed up my blackberry with BB Deskyop Managr and it is in a .ipd file and I can not open it. Is there a way to open and view this file? Please help.

Well here I am asking again. As everyone else on the webpage. I am again trying to find out what opens a IPD file. All this page did is bring me back here to find out this page does NOT know.It knows it is a backup file used by Blackberry...Yipee!! Tell me something I do not know. Now how about some useful info. Any thoughts?

Same query from me...but is it simply that the ipd files are there just as back-up...ie you aren't supposed to open them, just store them and put back on the BB if they get lost on the hand-held device or corrupted or something? Wouls someone please answer this set of queries and put us all out of our misery??

I have backed up my BB, but I need to be able to access certain MMS messages for printing how can I pull these MMS messages from the backup .ipd file and print them from my PC or is it possible to print directly from my BB? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have found the answer to our question, to convert your blackberry ipd backup file run a search for "FREE BLACKEBERRY CONVERTERS" look for abc abmber blackberry converter and down load the free 30 day demo and it'll solve your problem it worked for me! let me know if it works for u

Basicaly, the only known application to open this file is 'ABC Amber BlackBerry Converter' (link can be found above), which is free to use for 30 days and then $19.95 to purchase.

One could download Blackberry Simulator software from Research in Motion from na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/downloads/simulators.jsp, then using the standard Blackberry Deskop Software (also obtainable for free from RIM if needed) the .IPD can be restored to this simulated Blackberry. The simulated Blackberry can then be synchronized with a traditional PIM application, like MS Outlook. This solution is a bit cumbersome but it will work and uses software which is not trialware. I SOLVED my problem that I couldnt copy rename or even open the file in a different program like ABC. Reason for my problem with the ipd backup file was because security permission on the file is turned off when on a different computer. when in the explorer window of the folder that the ipd file is located in go to tools>folder options> view> then all the way at the bottom uncheck "use simple file sharing" click ok the right click on the ipd file and go to properties>security>advance>owner then click on your username and make sure it pops up at the "current owner of this item" then click ok and then ok again now right click on the ipd file then go to properties>security>add> then under "enter the object names" type everyone then click ok and click on your username and under "Allow" click "full control" then ok and the file should open with desktop manager. i had the problem all the guys had here and this was my solution hopefully its the same for the rest of you

Anyone in a pinch to recover something specific can open the file in EditPlus, Wordpad, Notepad or any text viewer to get to the information for viewing. If you know what you are looking for you can search the document using the built-in find tools.
You'll obviously be seeing things in their raw format and editing is not possible (DO NOT SAVE YOUR CHANGES!) but the contents of messages, address entries, notes and anything else in the file.
Drag the .ipd file from your backup directory into whatever application you wish to use to view and you can see the information in a fairly ugly but discernable format.

It is possible to copy the file and rename it to "whatever.rtf". The rtf stands for rich text format. It can be open from notepad but it is best for looking up numbers or messages because you have "ctrl+f" find the keyword or name you are trying to find.

Open it with wordpad, or notepad, and copy the plain text to another application and format it yourself; RIM was too lazy to do anything but make software to back them up. I did a LOT of searching, and couldn't find any software to do this besides a simulator: na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/downloads/simulators.jsp

The one thing they do have (and I forgot to mention) is a free contact editor, but that is all it will, and is set up to, edit.
