A LNK file is a file which contains a shortcut to a target program. These files, at a minimum, contain the path of the target program which should be executed by the Windows operating system. LNK files are usually easy to spot in the Windows environment due to the overlay of an inward arrow (as though it were an arrow pointing to the target file) over the original target file's image.
