.DOC File Extension

Microsoft Word Document

Text File
The .doc format (standing for document) belongs to Microsoft's Word application, which is part of the Microsoft Office suite. This format is arguably one of the most popular formats for digital documents, mainly due to the install base of Microsoft Office.

These documents normally contain a considerable amount of text formatting information and can even contain pictures.

.doc formatted files can be opened in all versions of Microsoft Word and many other applications also fully support the format (such as Open Office).
