ACTION files are associated with the Apple Automator application. Automator was developed by Apple to enable the creation of special workflows that can replace sequences of repetitive tasks. ACTION files contain specific actions and can be joined together to create automated processes.

Automator can be used with a large number of native Apple applications such as Address Book and Contacts, iCal/Calendar, Safari and Finder. It also offers support for 3rd party programs including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office and Pixelmator.

ACTION files are typically stored in the Automator folder found in System/Library. A complete Automator process is saved as a .WORKFLOW document.
